Remaking men who've let fashion, current hair styling trends and sometimes just basic hygiene pass them by, the stars of Bravo's hip makeover show, "Queer Eye for the Straight Guy" have impacted the way men view grooming. Perhaps that's why savvy barbers across the country are hiring cosmetology professionals and manicure school graduates.
Out with the Pole, in with the Pedicure!
While the concept is not new to those in L.A. or New York, increasing numbers of barbers are adding cosmetologists, estheticians and those with their manicurist licenses to their staffs, turning the traditional "barbershop" concept on its head!
Shave and a Shoe Shine?
Traditionally, barber college graduates offered shaves, haircuts and maybe the odd scalp treatment now and again. While these services are still offered, the new upscale shops are adding more traditional "salon-style" services including pedicures and manicures. They're also adding services that aren't traditionally taught at barber college or manicurist school - including shoe shines, massages, and even facials.
Sports Bar or Spa? No, Barbershop!
Along with changing up their traditional service offerings, these up-market barbershops are also changing out their traditional décor. So, while you're likely to still see combs and shears soaking in a jar of barbicide - chances are they'll be located right next to the giant, flat screen TV.
Headed in the Right Direction
According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics jobs for those working in the personal appearance industry - including those with their manicure or cosmetology licenses- are likely to grow as much as 20% through 2012. The best career opportunities will be available to those with the broadest range of training. By attending an accredited barber college, hair styling or cosmetology or manicurist school a great career in an upscale barber shop could be yours.
